LET’S GO STEM Pilot Program
LET’S GO Boys & Girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Program took place over the course of eight weeks at the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Baltimore (BGCMB) in Baltimore’s Westport community. With the help of five UMBC STEM students serving as mentors, the children of the Westport club had the opportunity to participate in either a robotics program or a science program on Thursday nights.
A group of 21 children from 4th grade through middle school learned to program and operate small robots. Another 26 students participated in the S2E2 (Simple Science and Everyday Engineering) program where they shared stories of “Science in the News” from the previous week and performed simple science experiments.
As the pilot program comes to an end, a “Celebration of STEM” will take place at the Westport Boys and Girls Club on May 5th. The program will give children the opportunity to demonstrate their new found robotics and science skills to their parents.
