Community in Motion: A Summer of Growth, Connection and Opportunity

On any given summer morning, youth and teens arrived at Boys & Girls Clubs across Baltimore City, Howard, Dorchester and Wicomico County ready to move. They moved between art projects and athletic challenges, from books and STEM activities to Ravens training day and field trips. They moved beyond their comfort zones, formed new friendships and discovered strengths they did not yet know they had. Around them, staff members, families, volunteers, community partners and supporters moved together to create a summer filled with safety, belonging and possibility.

This was Community in Motion—and Summer Camp 2026 brought that idea to life across Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore.

More Than a Place to Spend the Summer

For families, summer camp provides dependable care, enriching experiences and the comfort of knowing their children are surrounded by trusted adults. For Club members, it offers something even greater: a place to belong, explore and grow.

At the Ravens Club, we saw a new Club member begin the summer struggling to make new friends and engage with peers. With encouragement from our staff and support from fellow Club members, he began to open up and grow meaningful relationships within the Club. By the end of the 6-weeks, he was confident, excited to come to Club every day—he had found his voice. That transformation reflects what happens every day inside our Clubs. Through relationships, consistent encouragement and opportunities to try something new, young people develop confidence that extends far beyond the summer.

It is also our mission in action: helping young people—especially those who need us most—reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

Growth Across Our Core Pillars

Every activity offered during summer camp is designed to be fun, but the fun also has a purpose. Experiences throughout the summer supported the core pillars that guide our work year-round.

• Through Academic Success, campers kept their minds active with literacy, STEM, creative problem-solving and hands-on learning that helped prevent summer learning loss.

• Through Health and Wellness, young people stayed active, tried new sports, learned healthy habits and developed skills for managing their emotions and caring for themselves.

• Through Character and Leadership, campers practiced teamwork, responsibility and service. Older members stepped forward as role models, younger members learned to advocate for themselves, and youth across the organization discovered that leadership begins with how we treat one another.

• Through Life and Workforce Readiness, teens gained experience, explored future possibilities and strengthened the communication, decision-making and leadership skills they will carry into school, work and adulthood.

Teen engagement emerged as one of the summer’s most encouraging areas of growth. Teen average daily attendance increased 68% year over year, from 39 to 66, while the number of teens served increased 47%, from 245 to 359. These young people did not simply enroll—they returned, participated and became more deeply connected to their Clubs.

A Community-Wide Celebration

That spirit came together at Summer Fest, where all of our campers from nine Clubs gathered at the Baltimore Ravens Boys & Girls Club at Hilton Recreation Center.

Throughout the day, young people moved through sports, dance, art, carnival games, wellness activities, a foam zone and other experiences. For many campers, it was their first opportunity to visit the Ravens Club and meet Club members from other communities. What they found was bigger than a single event or location: they were part of one BGCMB community.

Summer Fest also demonstrated the power of partnership. Volunteers, supporters and community organizations helped create an experience that no Club could have produced alone. Each activity reflected a shared investment in ensuring young people have opportunities to play, create, connect and see how many people are standing behind them.

New Opportunities Through Partnership

That collective commitment continued with the launch of Police & Sneaks, bringing together law enforcement, community partners and young people through a positive back-to-school experience.

More than the distribution of new shoes and supplies, the event created space for connection. Young people met caring adults committed to their success, while partners had the opportunity to engage with Club members not from a distance, but as part of their community.

These moments matter. When organizations and individuals move beyond offering resources and build authentic relationships with young people, they help create stronger communities rooted in trust, opportunity and shared responsibility.

Keeping the Community in Motion

Our vision is not limited to one successful summer. We envision communities in which every young person has access to the relationships, experiences and opportunities they need to build a great future.

That vision comes to life through the values demonstrated across our Clubs every day: adults who show up consistently, young people who encourage one another, families who place their trust in us and partners who understand that meaningful impact is built together.

Summer Camp 2026 may have ended, but the growth it sparked continues. Young people are returning to school with new confidence, stronger relationships and a clearer sense of what they can accomplish. Teens are carrying leadership skills into classrooms and communities. Families remain connected to trusted Club teams. Partners are finding new ways to help opportunity move farther and reach more young people.

That is what a community in motion looks like: everyone moving forward, together—and ensuring that every young person has the support to do the same.
