Mental Health Awareness at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore continues well beyond the month of May. We are proud to spotlight the continued positive impact of our Positive Action program on youth at our Club at O'Donnell Heights.
Developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Positive Action is a nationally recognized, evidence-based curriculum that strengthens social-emotional learning by helping youth understand the link between their thoughts, actions, and outcomes. Rooted in the belief that positive behaviors create positive feelings about oneself, the program empowers young people to build confidence, make good choices, and foster healthy relationships.
Club members meet regularly in small groups to explore values like kindness, respect, and personal responsibility through guided lessons, reflection, and team-building activities.
The Positive Action Curriculum Consists of 6 Topics:
Philosophy and Self-Concept: Thoughts – Actions – Feelings About Self Circle
Healthy Body and Mind: Physical Positive Actions, Intellectual Positive Actions
Self-Management: Managing Yourself Responsibly
Social Skills: Getting Along with Others
Self-Honesty: Being Honest with Yourself and Others
Self-Improvement: Improving Yourself Continually
“The overall impact of the Positive Action Program was both meaningful and transformative,” said Nicole Sharpe, Club Coordinator at O’Donnell Heights. “It fostered a strong sense of community, encouraged personal growth, and empowered members to develop their confidence and leadership skills. I was especially proud of how inclusive and supportive the environment at the Club became, allowing individuals to express themselves freely and work toward shared goals.” Nicole continued, “One of the most significant impacts on members was the boost in self-esteem and motivation, as many reported feeling more capable, valued, and driven to make a difference both within and beyond the program. Witnessing these positive changes was a good reminder of the program’s purpose.”
As we reflect on the importance of mental and emotional health, Positive Action stands as a powerful reminder that early, consistent support for youth well-being can lead to lasting resilience, leadership, and self-worth.
