Building Confidence, Community, and Creativity at Laurel Woods Elementary

At Laurel Woods Elementary School, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore is more than an after-school program—it’s an extension of the strong school community, strengthened through our partnership with BRIDGES. BRIDGES is a grant-funded after-school program designed for students and families who attend Title I schools or schools serving a high percentage of low-income families. Through BRIDGES, students receive academic enrichment and additional support in reading and math—meeting critical needs that extend beyond the school day. Together, we’re creating a supportive space where 2nd–5th graders grow as learners, leaders, and community members.

The synergy between Laurel Woods and BGCMB is built on collaboration. Club staff work closely with teachers and administrators to understand student needs, align on goals, and create continuity between the school day and after-school hours.

In a predominantly Spanish-speaking community, the Club also plays a meaningful role in helping families feel supported. Staff regularly assist with translation and communication, ensuring every family can fully engage with the school and the program. Through the BRIDGES partnership, these connections are even stronger—allowing us to provide deeper academic, social, and emotional support.

Each afternoon, 35 youth participate in a rotation of engaging programs designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and encourage leadership:

  • Art Mondays: A beloved time for students to explore their imagination and develop creative skills.

  • Triple Play Tuesdays: A fun and active program that promotes movement, teamwork, and healthy habits.

  • Torch Club Wednesdays: A leadership and service-based program that empowers youth to make decisions and contribute to their community.

  • Badges for Baseball Thursdays: A character-building program that blends sports with lessons in teamwork, respect, and responsibility.

A consistent daily routine, including program time, shared dinner, and access to the gym. gives kids structure, stability, and a safe space to learn and grow.

Behind the success of Laurel Woods is a team of caring mentors deeply invested in the kids they serve. Club Coordinator Morelys Bustos or “Ms. M” is a former kindergarten teacher and is known for her creativity, warmth, and ability to connect with every child. She started as a part-time staff member before moving into a full-time role, and her passion for art and youth development shapes the entire culture of the Club.

Her leadership shines through in the staff she mentors, including Cori Webb, now in her second year as a Maryland Service Corps member. With guidance from Ms. M and the support of the Club environment, Cori has grown in confidence, patience, and skill and has discovered her passion for pursuing a career in elementary education.

Staff at Laurel Woods excel at meeting youth where they are. When a traditional written assessment felt out of reach for some students, the team transformed it into a lively Jeopardy-style game—ensuring every child, regardless of reading level, could participate meaningfully.

Daily reflection questions, positive incentives, and a thoughtful point system help reinforce strong habits, keep students engaged, and build a sense of ownership in their learning. The Club also runs SMART Moves, a BGCA program focused on emotional regulation and healthy decision-making, an essential support for youth still developing the tools to navigate big feelings.

The impact of the Laurel Woods Club is visible in the confidence, joy, and leadership skills that students bring into the classroom and carry home. It is a space where creativity is celebrated, relationships are strengthened, and every child knows they belong.
