America Needs Club Kids: Maryland Leaders Show Up for Our Youth

On January 28, 2026, leaders from across Maryland gathered at the historic Governor Calvert House in Annapolis for the annual Maryland Boys & Girls Club Legislative Breakfast — a powerful reminder that when we invest in young people, we invest in the future of our entire state.

From the very start, the energy in the room was hopeful and forward-looking. We were honored to hear inspiring remarks from Governor Wes Moore, who affirmed his administration’s strong alignment with the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs and the importance of ensuring all young people have access to opportunity. Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller also shared heartfelt words underscoring her commitment to expanding our impact and reaching even more youth and families across Maryland.

We extend deep appreciation as well to Senator Cory McCray and Senator Antonio Hayes for their thoughtful and encouraging reflections, and to the many Maryland legislators and partners in attendance. Representatives from the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation, Maryland State Police, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police, Maryland's Office of Overdose Response, the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy, and the Maryland Governor's Office for Children joined other distinguished guests to learn more about the life-changing work happening inside Clubs every single day.

Their presence sent a clear message: Maryland believes in its young people.

Youth Voices That Stole the Show

While the morning featured many powerful speakers, the true stars of the breakfast were our Club youth. BGCMB Club member Kiley proudly led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance, setting a tone of unity and shared purpose. Then came a moment no one will soon forget — Club member Riley delivered a vocal performance that left the room in tears and served as a living example of what happens when young people are given a safe place to grow and shine. We also celebrated two remarkable leaders: Jared J., 2025 Maryland State Youth of the Year and Aysia M., Maryland Military Youth of the Year

Both shared moving reflections on what their Club experiences have meant to them — the mentors who believed in them, the opportunities that stretched them, and the sense of belonging that helped shape who they are today. Their stories weren’t just inspiring; they were proof.

Proof that when young people have access to encouragement, guidance, and opportunity, they rise — not only for themselves, but for their communities.

Why This Matters: America Needs Club Kids

The theme woven throughout the morning was clear and urgent: America Needs Club Kids.

We need their creativity. We need their leadership. We need their resilience. We need their hope.

Boys & Girls Clubs don’t just provide after-school programs — they help build the next generation of leaders, innovators, public servants, and community changemakers. Every handshake between a legislator and a Club teen, every conversation about expanded access, every commitment to partnership brings us one step closer to a Maryland — and an America — where all young people have the chance to reach their full potential.

The Legislative Breakfast is a powerful demonstration of what’s possible when state leadership, community partners, and youth voices come together with a shared belief in the potential of every child. Because when we show up for kids, they show up for the future.
