On Saturday, September 20, members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore had the opportunity to attend the Truth and Service Classic, where Howard University faced off against Hampton University. For many of our teens, it was their very first time experiencing an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) college football game—and the day was nothing short of unforgettable.
From the moment they stepped into the stadium, the energy of the crowd, the pride of the universities, and the traditions on full display gave our teens a powerful introduction to the unique culture of HBCUs.
One of the most inspiring moments came at halftime, when Howard’s Showtime Band took the field. Their high-energy performance left a lasting impression. One of our members, who currently plays in their school orchestra, was so moved by the performance that they walked away with a new dream: to one day join a college band and be part of that same legacy.
The day carried an especially meaningful connection. The teens who attended are members of our Boys & Girls Club located on a college campus—Howard Community College (HCC). Experiencing the traditions and pride of Howard University provided them with a living example of what higher education can offer, linking their Club experience directly to the broader opportunities available through college and HBCU traditions.
For our staff, the event was also deeply personal. “It was incredibly meaningful to watch my members see my school represented and to witness Howard make history with a major win over Hampton,” shared current Howard University student and Club Manager Candice Brown. “The members could not stop talking about how grateful they were and happy they had a chance to have this experience.”
The Truth and Service Classic was more than a game—it was a rich moment of exposure, inspiration, and cultural pride. Experiences like these help our teens expand their vision of what’s possible, whether in college, a career, or beyond. By connecting them to the traditions and opportunities of higher education, we’re preparing young people not just for today, but to step confidently into futures filled with purpose, leadership, and readiness for life and the workforce.
