Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore teens from our Howard Community College (HCC) site recently experienced an unforgettable lesson in leadership and perseverance during Senator Cory McCray’s book signing for The Apprenticeship That Saved My Life.
The event, hosted at HCC, brought together young people, educators, and community leaders for a conversation about courage, opportunity, and personal growth. Senator McCray’s story—rooted in hard work, resilience, and mentorship—offered our teens a powerful example of what it means to take ownership of one’s future.
During the Q&A, Senator McCray shared how he makes it a practice to “walk toward the things that make him uncomfortable,” encouraging the audience to embrace challenges as a path to growth. That message struck a chord with our Club members, many of whom are developing the same skills of courage, character, and leadership through Club experiences every day.
“It was a great opportunity to see someone who looks like you and went through some of the same things that I am experiencing in my life now—and was able to make it out and become successful,” said Club teen, A’lanii G.
Candice Brown, our HCC Club Coordinator, reflected on the event as “a master class in courage and community. As soon as we entered the event, our teens lit up during the Q&A, especially when Senator McCray spoke about perseverance and walking toward discomfort,” she shared. “Seeing them meet both Senator McCray and HCC President, Dr. Daria J. Willis, left our teens proud to be Club kids—especially when Dr. Willis reminded them that our Club is the first Boys & Girls Club on a college campus in the country.”
That message of pride and possibility resonated deeply. The visit underscored how spaces like the Boys & Girls Club provide structure, mentorship, and real-world readiness experiences that prepare youth for the future workforce. Senator McCray’s reflection that he “didn’t have structured recreation growing up” reminded our members just how valuable their daily Club experiences are in shaping their paths forward.
“We were honored to host Senator McCray's presentation to our Boys & Girls Club on campus” shared Dr. Willis. “When young people hear honest stories from experienced leaders who are making a difference in our communities, they can envision their own potential. These opportunities strengthen our families, communities, and state”.
To cap off an inspiring day, the teens surprised Senator McCray with a handmade birthday poster—a small but heartfelt gesture of gratitude that captured the creativity and leadership that define our Club community.

“Our experience meeting Senator McCray was wonderful,” Youth Development Coordinator Simba Machekano added. “The kids got to see firsthand someone who comes from a similar background and has such an impactful and moving story. Listening to the Senator speak about apprenticeship and empowering young people to take charge of their future was truly inspiring.”
At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore, we know that great futures start with great mentors and meaningful experiences. This event was the perfect example of connection, confidence, and leadership in action.
