Youth from our Boys & Girls Club of Metro Baltimore Westport Club recently enjoyed an unforgettable day at Loyola University, where Olympic legend Michael Phelps and Baltimore Ravens players joined them for a splash-filled—and important—water safety experience in the pool.
It all started when the Baltimore Ravens made a bold Instagram call: one in three players don’t know how to swim. Baltimore native Michael Phelps answered — turning the pool into a hub of learning, laughter, and high-fives. Kids and players alike practiced strokes, learned water safety, and shared plenty of laughs along the way. With 1 in 3 children and over 40 million adults in the U.S. unable to swim, the lessons were life-saving, and fun!
Beyond teaching strokes, the event was about motivating our kids to swim, showing them that learning this life skill is safe, empowering and full of joy.
“This is the best trip I’ve ever been on, Mr. Kenny. I’m so glad to have this opportunity,” said Club Kid Mason. Youth member Victor added, “Thank you for bringing me on this trip. This trip was so much fun!” And Chayse proudly shared, “Mr. Phelps gave me his swim cap!!”
Club Manager Kenny Ervin reflected, “Being part of the Michael Phelps Foundation and Ravens swimming event was truly inspiring. Witnessing the power of sports to bring communities together, promote water safety, and encourage young people to chase their goals both in and out of the pool.”
A huge thank you to Michael Phelps, the Michael Phelps Foundation for their continued support of Boys & Girls Clubs across the county, and our partner, the Baltimore Ravens, for showing up as role models for the next generation of swimmers. This event proved that when sports and mentorship collide, kids can dive in, play hard, and dream bigger than ever — both in and out of the water!
