Thermo Fisher Brings Hands-On STEM Learning to Baltimore Club Members

At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when young people have the opportunity to explore, experiment, and discover something new for themselves. On July 23, that spirit of discovery came to life as volunteers from Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Baltimore team spent the day engaging Club members through hands-on STEM activities at our Brooklyn O’Malley and Webster Kendrick Clubs.

The volunteer experience gave young people an opportunity to step into the world of science and learn more about genetics and DNA in a fun, accessible way. With support from Thermo Fisher volunteers, Club members participated in a strawberry DNA extraction experiment, using an everyday fruit to see science in action right in front of them.

For our Club members, experiences like these go beyond a single experiment. They spark curiosity, encourage young people to ask questions, and expose them to subjects and career pathways they may not encounter in their everyday lives. A hands-on activity can be the first step toward a lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering, or math.

Just as importantly, our young people had the opportunity to learn alongside professionals who use science in their work. Those interactions help make future possibilities feel more tangible and remind Club members that there are many different paths available to them as they grow.

At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore, we work to create opportunities that support academic success, career exploration, leadership development, and the confidence young people need to pursue their goals. Partnerships with organizations like Thermo Fisher Scientific allow us to bring those opportunities directly into our Clubs while connecting our members with caring adults who are willing to share their time, knowledge, and experiences.

The day also demonstrated the impact corporate volunteers can make by bringing their own skills and expertise into the Club environment. Whether introducing a young person to a new STEM concept, answering questions about a career, or simply encouraging them to keep exploring, those moments of connection can leave a lasting impression.

We are incredibly grateful to Thermo Fisher Scientific and each of the Baltimore-area volunteers who spent July 23 investing in our Club members at Brooklyn O’Malley and Webster Kendrick.

Together, we’re helping young people discover new interests, imagine new possibilities, and see that their futures can take them anywhere—even into the world of science.
