It’s not every day that the Mayor drops by the Club — but when he does, it’s a moment our kids won’t soon forget.
Mayor Randy Taylor of Salisbury spent the morning with youth from our Club at Truitt Community Center in our Passport to Manhood program, sitting down to talk about careers, dreams, and what it really means to lead a city. From the start, he made it clear he wasn’t there to give a speech, he was there to connect.
The Mayor shared about the twists and turns of his own journey, from working in Washington, D.C. for Congressman Jack Kemp, to moving back home and building a 25-year career in commercial banking before stepping into city leadership. His message? Your path might not be a straight line, but with hard work and persistence, you can get where you want to go.

The kids had plenty of questions of their own, too! They wanted to know his favorite football team (no hesitation: the Ravens) and what his dream car would be (a Land Rover). Laughter filled the room, showing just how quickly the conversation turned into something real and relatable.
When Mayor Taylor broke down what a city budget covers — fire and police protection, roads, and infrastructure — the kids connected the dots right away. One of them asked if he could put an athletic field at the Club. It was a lighthearted but honest moment that showed how much they care about having safe, active spaces right here in their community.
And then there was the moment everyone will remember. A young girl came into the room while her mom joined on FaceTime. With wide eyes and a big smile, she told the Mayor she had dreamed of meeting him. It was an incredible moment to see a dream come true.
Now 59 with two grown children of his own, Mayor Taylor related to the kids not just as a politician, but as a neighbor and a dad. His time at the Club was less about titles and more about showing our youth that their futures are wide open — and that Salisbury is a place where big dreams can grow.
About Passport to Manhood
Mayor Taylor’s visit was part of our Passport to Manhood program, one of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s signature character-building initiatives. Designed for boys ages 8–14, the program is built around 14 sessions that focus on key topics like responsibility, decision-making, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships. Each participant gets a “passport” to mark their journey, and the program ends with a service project that puts their lessons into action.
It’s all about giving young men the tools, values, and role models they need as they grow into adulthood. Having the Mayor join them for a conversation brought those lessons to life in a powerful way.
At the Boys & Girls Club, we believe in showing kids what’s possible — and giving them the support to get there. Thanks to Mayor Taylor’s visit, our members walked away inspired, motivated, and reminded that their voices matter.
